Get Started

Set up Möbius Sync on your iPhone

Follow the steps below to connect your iPhone to the family server. The whole process takes about 5 minutes.

iOS uses Möbius Sync. There is no official Syncthing app for iPhone/iPad. The third-party app Möbius Sync is available on the App Store (one-time purchase, ~$5) and works well, but it has some iOS-imposed limitations like not being able to sync continuously in the background.

  1. Install Möbius Sync

    Purchase and install Möbius Sync from the App Store.

  2. Add the family server

    In Möbius Sync, go to Add Device and paste the server's Device ID shown below:

  3. Wait for approval

    Once you add the server, Daniel will see your device on the dashboard and approve it. You'll get a notification in Möbius Sync when you're connected.

  4. Folders sync automatically

    After approval, shared folders will appear in Möbius Sync automatically. Daniel will share the folder encryption password with you securely.

Due to iOS restrictions, Möbius Sync syncs when you open the app or periodically in the background. It won't be as instant as on other platforms, but it works reliably.
FAQ

Common questions

Is this like iCloud or Google Drive?
Similar concept, but fundamentally different in how it works. iCloud and Google Drive upload your files to their servers where they can (and do) read them. With our setup, your files are encrypted before they leave your device. The server is just a dumb relay that stores encrypted blobs. Nobody — not even Daniel as the server admin — can read your files without the folder password.
Can Daniel see my files?
No. The server is configured as an "untrusted" device. It receives and stores only encrypted data — encrypted filenames, encrypted contents. Daniel could log into the server and would see nothing but random-looking encrypted blobs. Only devices that have the folder password can read the files.
What if my iPhone breaks?
Your files are safe on the server (encrypted) and on any other devices you've connected. Just install Möbius Sync on your new iPhone, connect to the server, and enter the folder password. Your files will sync back automatically.
Does it sync automatically?
On iOS, Möbius Sync syncs when you open the app or periodically in the background. It's not as instant as iCloud, but it's reliable and your data stays private.
What if the server goes down?
Your files are still on your iPhone — nothing is lost. When the server comes back online, everything catches up automatically.
Is Möbius Sync free?
Möbius Sync has a small one-time purchase price (~$5) since it's developed by a third party. The Syncthing protocol itself is free and open source, and the server costs nothing beyond the hardware Daniel manages.

Important: Keep your folder password safe. If you lose it and all your trusted devices are gone, the encrypted data on the server cannot be recovered. Consider storing it in a password manager.
